Southeastern Drops Season Opener at Tulane
Green Wave Rallies from 10-Point Deficit in Final Minutes
Lions Fall 35-31 at Yulman Stadium
NEW ORLEANS – Southeastern Louisiana University’s football team dropped its season opener at Tulane, 35-31, on Saturday night at Yulman Stadium.
Trailing 31-21 with less than three minutes remaining, the Green Wave rallied for two touchdowns to escape with the victory.
After Southeastern senior safety Donniel Ward intercepted Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt at the Southeastern 13-yard line with 2:41 left, the Lions were unable to run out the clock and were forced to punt the ball back to the Green Wave.
Tulane took over at its own 24-yard line with 1:25 remaining and marched 76 yards in 11 plays, capped by Tyjae Spears’ 3-yard touchdown run with 13 seconds remaining.
Spears, the nation’s leading returning rusher, finished with 170 yards on 24 carries.
The Lions, who held a 24-14 lead at the half, saw their hopes of a season-opening upset dashed by Pratt, who threw for 349 yards and three touchdowns.
Southeastern quarterback Cole Kelley threw for 196 yards and a touchdown, while running back Taron Jones rushed for 114 yards and a score.
The Lions will return to action next Saturday when they host Nicholls State University in their home opener at Strawberry Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
