AuroraWatch UK Alerts for Northern Lights Visibility in the UK
Scientists Collaborate to Provide Real-Time Aurora Reports
AuroraWatch UK is a free service that provides alerts when the aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, may be visible from the UK. The service is run by scientists in the Space and Planetary Physics group at the University of Southampton and collaborates with the Aurorasaurus citizen science project to gather real-time aurora reports.
When and Where to See the Aurora in the UK
The aurora borealis is a natural phenomenon that occurs when charged particles from the sun interact with the Earth's magnetic field near the North and South Poles. As the UK is located south of the natural aurora belt, which stretches across Norway, Iceland, and Greenland, it is not common to see the aurora from Britain.
However, during periods of high solar activity, the aurora can occasionally be seen in the night sky over the UK. The best time to see the aurora is during the winter months, when the nights are longer and darker. The aurora is most likely to be visible in the northern part of the UK, such as Scotland and Northern England.
