Oklahoma Tornado Season in Full Swing
April and May Peak Months for Tornadoes
Oklahoma is experiencing a surge in tornado activity, with Norman being the latest area to be hit. According to the Storm Prediction Center, Oklahoma tends to see the most tornadoes during the months of April and May. The state has already seen a total of 83 tornadoes this year, the highest total for any month or season on record.
Most Devastating Tornadoes
While most tornadoes are not as powerful as the one that hit Norman, there have been some devastating tornadoes in Oklahoma's history. In 1999, an F5 tornado killed 36 people and injured over 500 in Moore, Oklahoma. In 2013, an EF5 tornado killed 24 people and injured over 300 in El Reno, Oklahoma. These tornadoes are a reminder of the importance of being prepared for severe weather.
Tips for Staying Safe
There are a number of things you can do to stay safe during tornado season:
- Be aware of the weather forecast and listen for tornado warnings.
- Have a plan for where you will go if a tornado warning is issued.
- If you are outside, seek shelter in a sturdy building or underground.
- If you are in a car, pull over and get out of the vehicle. Lie down in a ditch or other low-lying area.
